چکیده

Introduction: One important treatment for Parkinson’s disease (PD) is electrical stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) [1]. Direct visualization of the STN for precise electrode positioning remains an issue, because this structure is relatively small and hard to distinguish from the adjacent substantia nigra (SN) [2]. A recent study used the high contrast of phase images to visualize the STN [3]. Unfortunately, phase images suffer from misleading non-local effects [4]. Here, we acquired high-resolution phase images at 7T, from which we calculated susceptibility maps that gave precise delineation of the STN while completely avoiding non-local effects.

Direct visualization of non-human primate subcortical nuclei with contrast-enhanced high field MRI

Subcortical nuclei are increasingly targeted for deep brain stimulation (DBS) and for gene transfer to treat neurological and psychiatric disorders. For a successful outcome in patients, it is critical to place DBS electrodes or infuse viral vectors accurately within targeted nuclei. However current MRI approaches are still limited to localize brainstem and basal ganglia nuclei accurately. By c...

Comparison of Two Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping Measurement Methods Used For Anatomical Localization of the Iron-Incorporated Deep Brain Nuclei

Introduction Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) is a new contrast mechanism in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The images produced by the QSM enable researchers and clinicians to easily localize specific structures of the brain, such as deep brain nuclei. These nuclei are targets in many clinical applications and therefore their easy localization is a must. In this study, we aimed to i...

The Subcortical Cocktail Problem; Mixed Signals from the Subthalamic Nucleus and Substantia Nigra

The subthalamic nucleus and the directly adjacent substantia nigra are small and important structures in the basal ganglia. Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies have shown that the subthalamic nucleus and substantia nigra are selectively involved in response inhibition, conflict processing, and adjusting global and selective response thresholds. However, imaging these nuclei is complex...

Comparison of T2*-weighted and QSM contrasts in Parkinson's disease to visualize the STN with MRI

The subthalamic nucleus (STN) plays a crucial role in the surgical treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD). Studies investigating optimal protocols for STN visualization using state of the art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques have shown that susceptibility weighted images, which display the magnetic susceptibility distribution, yield better results than T1-weighted, T2-weighted, and T2...

Direct visualization of anatomic subfields within the superior aspect of the human lateral thalamus by MRI at 7T.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The morphology of the human thalamus shows high interindividual variability. Therefore, direct visualization of landmarks within the thalamus is essential for an improved definition of electrode positions for deep brain stimulation. The aim of this study was to provide anatomic detail in the thalamus by using inversion recovery TSE imaging at 7T. MATERIALS AND METHODS T...
